Plaid Cymru Councillor Takes Dangers Of Contaminated Land To London

Steve Skivens

Caerphilly Plaid Cymru councillor Steve Skivens has taken the issue of  contaminated land to the Houses of Parliament.

At the Zane’s Law summit this week (June 11) organised by the National Landfill Campaign and supported by Baroness Natalie Bennett several speakers and experts aired concerns from across the UK.

The meeting was supported by UK Environment Secretary Steve Reed, trade unionrepresentatives and MPs from across the political divide.

Penyrheol ward councillor Steve Skivens said: “There are many waste and landfill sites in our community and across Wales. They must be managed, risk assessed and information about these sites should be available to the public.”

Steve Skivens, a former Assistant Chief Fire Officer of South Wales Fire & Rescue, said: “In Caerphilly County we have had issues at  the disused Thomas Ness Tar plant, Penrhos, Virginia Gardens and Ty Llwyd Quarry in Ynysddu.

“Residents and activists are concerned over damage to the environment, natural habitats and species decline, health concerns and the long-term legacy if these sites are built on or attempts made at remediation.

“We need candour from the authorities on how we manage this industrial legacy literally below our feet. It is hoped that Zane’s Law, if accepted, will assist local authorities in managing these sites and bring transparency to communities. Monies can be sort from Government for remediation of  coal and slag tips. However, theEnvironmental Protection Acts must follow their original directionand make the polluter pay.

“Unfortunately, Caerphilly County has previously rejected support  for Zane’s Law but myself, environmental campaigners and other councillors in the affected areas are determined to fight on for protection of our communities.”

  • A proposed Zane’s Law has been put forward by Zane Gbangbola’s parents following their son’s death after a flood in 2014. Campaigners argue regulations on contaminated land are grossly inadequate and a threat to the safety of many.
