Information About Delyth

Hello! My name's Delyth Jewell and I'm a Member of the Senedd for Plaid Cymru for South Wales East. This page contains some information about who I am and the work that I do. If you are a constituent who’d like to get in touch with me about an issue, please click here for information about how to contact me.

Personal Background

I’ve got deep roots in this area and am proud to call it my home.  I was born in Caerphilly and grew up in Ystrad Mynach, where I attended Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Allta.

After this I attended Cwm Rhymni school in Bargoed.  The experiences I’ve had in the valleys, and the kindness of its people, have shaped me and my outlook on life.  After receiving my A Levels, I studied English in St Hugh’s College, Oxford (where I was president of the Welsh society Cymdeithas Dafydd ap Gwilym), and went on to do a Masters in Celtic Studies.

Professional Background

After graduating, I went to work in Westminster for Plaid Cymru where I was a speech writer for Elfyn Llwyd and Dafydd Wigley, and during my time there I helped secure laws on stalking and coercive control through coordinating cross-party campaigns.  In 2014, I was honoured to be awarded the prize of ‘Overall Researcher of the Year’ in the DODS Researcher of the Year Awards as a result of my cross-party campaign work.

In 2015, I moved back to Wales and started working for Citizens Advice in Cardiff, where I learned first-hand about the best ways to help people with their problems – problems that were so often caused by the cruel austerity policies of the Conservatives in Westminster.  I later worked for Action Aid, an international human rights organisation, where I worked with partners in Ghana, Kenya, Jordan and Nepal to challenge structures that keep poor people poor.

The thread running through the experiences I had in my career before taking my seat in the Senedd is that I’ve sought out ways to help improve people’s lives, and to give a voice to the people who need it most.  These are principles that I hold dear to my heart, and which guide me in everything I would do as your Member of the Senedd. My Role in the Senedd

In May 2021, I was re-elected to the Senedd as a Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd for South Wales East.  This is the Senedd region that includes the following constituencies: Blaenau Gwent, Caerffili, Islwyn, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymni, Monmouth, Newport East, Newport West and Torfaen.  I have been named my party’s spokesperson on Climate Change (a portfolio that includes transport, energy and digital policy), and in my first term in the role I led a debate in the Senedd that resulted in Wales being the first parliament in the world to declare a nature emergency.  I’ve also set to work to help tackle climate anxiety amongst young people through introducing debates and questions in the Senedd, and have spoken about the dire effects that air pollution can have on children’s health.  I’ve been named a Clean Air Champion for this Senedd, and am part of a cross-party campaign to push for a Clean Air Bill for Wales.

In addition to my spokesperson responsibilities for my party, I am honoured to have been elected Chair of the Senedd’s Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport, and International Relations Committee.  I am also one of my party’s representatives on the board of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), and have been re-elected Chair of the Senedd's Cross-Party Group on Intergenerational Solidarity.

My main political interest outside of these duties is campaigning on behalf of my constituents who are facing different forms of injustices. If you have a problem that you believe I could help with, feel free to get in touch with me.
