Plaid Cymru Caerphilly County Councillors Charlotte Bishop (Deputy Leader) and Steve Skivens (Chair of the Caerphilly Constituency) have voiced strong opposition to the proposed closure of 10 local libraries.
Standing in solidarity with protestors in the Aber Valley (where Abertridwr library is under threat), the councillors emphasised the vital role libraries play in the community. “Libraries are multi-generational hubs,” said Aber Valley Councillor Charlotte Bishop. “They’re not just about borrowing books—they’re about bridging the learning gap for students in deprived areas, supporting job seekers, hosting craft and baby groups, and providing warm, welcoming spaces for all.”
Councillor Skivens added, “These libraries are more than buildings—they are lifelines. They serve as gathering sites for community groups, helping to combat loneliness and foster social cohesion. Closing them would be a short-sighted move with long-term consequences.”
Plaid Cymru is urging the council to reconsider any plans for closures and instead invest in these essential public services that support education, wellbeing, and community resilience.
The Labour council’s executive cabinet is due to discuss the future of libraries plan at a meeting on May 14.
