Plaque Dedicated To Miners Who Fought In The Spanish Civil War Set To Be Displayed

A plaque dedicated to those who fought in the International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War will be displayed at a new Italian coffee shop opposite Caerphilly Castle, Plaid Cymru group leader Lindsay Whittle has been told.

The plaque was housed in the now closed Coffi Vista and Councillor Lindsay Whittle was concerned about its future after Caerphilly Council shut the coffee shop earlier this year.

Councillor Lindsay Whittle, who was leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council when the plaque was unveiled,  said: “This plaque is very important because it is dedicated to all those brave Welsh miners who went to fight against the fascist General Franco in Spain during the 1930s.

“At the time it was unveiled I made it clear that I did not want my name on the plaque because it was about the miners and their fight. Families of the deceased miners attended at the time.”

When he heard nothing recently about the plaque’s future, Councillor Lindsay Whittle wrote to council officers to find out what was happening.

In an email to Councillor Lindsay Whittle, an officer wrote: “I’ve just had confirmation that the new tenants have ensured the plaque is in place and as we discussed in earlier emails and I had discussed with the new tenant some weeks ago. We will make plans to move it to the library if the tenant wants it moved.”

Councillor Lindsay Whittle said: “I’m pleased that if the owners of Rosita’s decided not to display this piece of history then it will be moved to the library. This piece of history must not be lost.”
